SA vs BAN, 1st Test Day 4: Bangladesh suffer three losses at stumps in 274-run chase against South Africa

Bangladesh quickly lost three wickets in search of their maiden Test win against South Africa on the fourth day of the first Test at Kingsmead on Sunday.

Bangladesh, set on 274 for victory, were nearly 11 for three with South African spinners Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj taking all three wickets within five overs with the new ball.

Off-spinner Harmer got Shadman Islam caught at slip for zero in the second over, before left-armer Keshav Maharaj took two wickets in his third over.

Maharaj bowled first innings century-maker Mahmudul Hasan Jai for four off a ball and found a gap between the bat and the pad.

Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque scored two runs before going back to his stumps and was leg-trapped before the wicket.

The late afternoon collapse undermined the good work Bangladesh had done in the first day with excellent bowling and fielding performances.

South Africa appeared to be in control of the match when they reached 105 for one at lunch in their second innings.

But Bangladesh came back strongly and bowled out the home team for 204 runs.

Fast bowler Abadot Hossain took three for 40, while off-spinner Mehdi Hasan took three for 85 in 35 overs.

Dean Elgar scored 64, his second half-century of the match, and debutant Ryan Rickelton was stranded on 39 when the last three wickets fell for two runs off seven balls.

Mehdi bowled with excellent control, as he did in the first innings, which enabled Mominul to use his pace bowlers in short spells.

Bangladesh took four wickets in 28 overs between lunch and tea and conceded only 52 runs.

South African captain Elgar, who scored 67 in the first innings, was twice dismissed for 34 off Mehdi Hasan and 43 off Abadot at slips.

But Bangladesh made up for the errors with excellent catches by Yasir Ali at slip and a silly mid-off by Shadman, while substitute Nurul Hasan plucked a straight-hit run-out from Harmer from the cover boundary.
