Restaurants take help of police to stay open late. Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: Welcoming the recent Madras High Court ruling that the police has no authority to order the closure of eateries at a certain time, the Coimbatore District Hoteliers Association (CDHA) sought the cooperation of the police department to implement the order on Monday.
CDHA Secretary M Sivakumar Said that the eateries are now forced to close at 10.30 pm. “The restaurants that remain open overnight will benefit commuters and those working in odd hours. The court also observed that it is the bounden duty of the police to provide proper security to the eateries,” he said.
While bars and cinema halls remain open till midnight, forcing restaurants to close at 10.30 pm is ridiculous, said the association’s vice president R Balachander said. “Now that the High Court has taken the decision, the police should let us work as per our convenience,” he said. “Two years after the pandemic, this is the right time to grow the business by increasing working hours. Sales have returned to pre-covid levels and we should be allowed to operate at least till 11am. The court order will benefit 250 registered and 1,500 unregistered members of the district.
The association plans to hold a meeting with senior government officials and police officers regarding their demand.
