Ashwin was the first man who brought Mankad into limelight when he ran out Jos Buttler during IPL 2019. Since then he has been a vocal advocate of this method of dismissal.

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has once again hit out at the purists of the game who feel that Mankad should be avoided at all costs. The 36-year-old came out in defense of Australian spinner Adam Zampa after he was slammed by commentators and social media users alike for mankading one of the batsmen during a Big Bash League match in Melbourne.

Calling it a huge insult, he criticized Zampa’s BBL coach David Hussey, who said he would have withdrawn if the appeal was rejected. “First of all, why should you withdraw the appeal? A bowler is running out the non-striker. Will the captain say that the bowler is wrong or what? What an insult to the bowler if the captain is withdrawing the appeal.

Apart from this, he had said that he was tired of justifying Mankad, Willie Offie still came out and hit out at one of the users who said that bowlers should use some skill to take wickets.

“Repressed community called ‘bowler’ please wake up,” he tweeted, quoting one of the users who attached a snippet of the Test match played between England and New Zealand in Leeds this year. In this video, a batsman is given out because the ball bounced off the non-striker and hit the stumps. This meant a wicket for spinner Jack Leach.

Calling the bowlers the victimizer, Ashwin has reiterated that the rules have always favored the batsmen. Even on the same day, former India bowler Venkatesh Prasad also criticized Australia’s Mark Waugh, who again questioned the manner of the dismissal. He cited the example of Pakistan’s U-19 player who was run out by the non-striker against Rwanda during a T20 World Cup match. Waugh had said: “The worst thing is that it seems that teams are using it in a deliberately planned way to get wickets.” To which Prasad replied, “Yeah, that’s right, bowlers planning to get a player out by legal means. That’s the worst thing. The batsman trying to get an unfair advantage by not staying at the crease, that’s the best thing.” “

Here, it has to be mentioned that Mankad has been made legal after the ICC amended its rule last year.

Ashwin was the first man who brought Mankad into limelight when he ran out Jos Buttler during IPL 2019. Since then he has been a vocal advocate of this method of dismissal. The Mankad debate flared up again after India’s Deepti Sharma was run out by Charlie Dean. In recent weeks, the Zampa incident again hit the headlines, polarizing world cricket once again. Now, the U-19 World Cup incident has again triggered a social media war over the controversial manner of the dismissal.
