Punjab’s nominated Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stakes claim to form government, will take oath on March 16

new Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Punjab’s nominated Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met Governor Banwarilal Purohit at Chandigarh’s Raj Bhavan on Saturday to stake claim to form the new government in the state.

He reached the Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh around 10:30 in the morning.

“I met the governor and handed over letters of support from our MLAs and staked claim to form the government,” Mann said.

Mann will take oath as the Chief Minister of Punjab on March 16 at Khatkar Kalan, the native village of great freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in Nawanshahr district of the state.

“He told me to tell him wherever we want to hold the oath-taking ceremony. It will be organized on March 16 at 12.30 pm in Khatkar Kalan, the native village of Bhagat Singh.

“People from homes across Punjab will come to the ceremony, they will also pay tribute to Bhagat Singh. We will have a good cabinet, historic decisions – which have never been done before – will be made. So, you have to wait,” he said.


Earlier on Friday, Mann was elected the leader of the AAP Legislature Party at a meeting of party legislators in Mohali.

Legislature party meeting was held today. We have formally elected Bhagwant Mann as our leader,” AAP leader Aman Arora said on Friday.

The names of many MLAs including Jeevan Jyot Kaur Harpal Singh Cheema, Aman Arora and Dr Charanjit Singh are in discussion for the post of minister.

Mann has invited AAP’s national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for his swearing-in ceremony.

Mann and Kejriwal will visit Golden Temple, Durgiana Temple and Shri Ram Tirath Temple on Sunday.

Apart from this, both will also take part in a road show in Amritsar to thank voters for AAP’s resounding victory in the Punjab Assembly elections.

This happened after the AAP secured a historic victory in the Punjab elections by winning 92 seats in the 117-member assembly.

The Congress managed to win just 18 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got two.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) registered its victory in only three seats, while the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) managed to win only one seat.
