Houseplants can improve air quality, reduce pollution, claims UK study

A new study claims that houseplants make a significant contribution to reducing air pollution inside homes and offices by 20%. The study was led by the University of Birmingham in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society.

In addition to making your home lively, plants contribute to eliminating indoor pollution. To conduct the study, researchers included—the peace lily, corn plant, and the fern arum. These three plants were kept in the busiest roadside office and were monitored on a daily basis. It was found that all three plants were able to reduce the level of nitrogen dioxide inside the office.

Equally capable of removing nitrogen hydroxide, Dr. Christian Pfrang said, “The plants we selected were all very different from each other. Despite this, all plants managed to improve the office environment. All three plants were present in the office. The ability to remove nitrogen dioxide, a gas released from electronic items and from cooking fumes, also worsens indoor air quality.

These plants are most effective in preventing pollution.

According to experts, traditional trees like Peepal, Banyan, Pakad, Jamun, Neem, Harsingar, Ashok, Arjun, Mahua, Kaner etc. are pollution tolerant. To reduce pollution, they should be installed along roadsides and in residential areas, they absorb fine particles of dust. These plants purify the air and prevent pollution to a great extent.
