Tech giant Sony is removing access to hundreds of movies and TV shows on its PlayStation Store service next month, meaning users who previously paid for titles like Paddington and The Hunger Games will no longer be able to watch them.

According to legal notices posted on two regional sites, the shutdown affects users in Germany and Austria, and covers films produced by StudioCanal, reports The Verge.

The shutdown will go into effect on August 31, exactly a year after Sony stopped purchasing movies and TV shows from its digital stores.

Sony said at the time that its customers would be able to access content they had already purchased, the report said.

The notice posted on the PlayStation website blames “developed license agreements with content providers” (via machine translation) for the change, and says purchased content will be removed from subscribers’ video libraries.

The shutdown serves as an important reminder that even when you “purchase” a title digitally, your ownership often depends on a retailer that exists and has the right licensing deals.
