PM Modi’s security a few kilometers from Pak border failure of Punjab government: Amarinder Singh

Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security lapse as a “complete failure of the Punjab government” ahead of a rally in Punjab’s Ferozepur.

“It is a complete failure of the Punjab government,” Singh told News18 over phone. Pointing out that the incident took place “just a few kilometers from the Pakistan border”, he called for the Congress government to be “sacked”.

He further alleged, “CM Channi is responsible for this lapse as he is the chief minister of the state.”

The former chief minister had formed his own party, the Punjab Lok Congress, after leaving the ruling Congress in the state last year following his unofficial exit as CM. His party is in alliance with the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal-United for the assembly elections to be held next year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was stranded on a flyover in Punjab for 15-20 minutes due to a blockade by some protesters and returned without attending an event at a martyr’s memorial in Hussainiwala.

The Union Home Ministry has asked the Punjab government to fix the responsibility of this serious lapse and sought a detailed report. About 30 km from the National Martyrs Memorial in Hussainiwala, when Modi’s convoy reached a flyover, it was found that some protesters had blocked the road.

The Home Ministry said the Prime Minister’s schedule and travel plan had been communicated to the Punjab government in advance and as per the procedure, they would have to keep a contingency plan ready along with logistics, security.

Also, the home ministry said, in view of the contingency plan, the Punjab government would have to deploy additional security to secure any movement by road, which were clearly not deployed.

BJP president JP Nadda accused the Congress government in Punjab of “doing everything possible to spoil” PM Modi’s programs in the state.

“The protesters were allowed to go in the way of the Prime Minister, while the CS (Chief Secretary) and DGP of Punjab assured the SPG that the path was clear,” he said. Either address the matter or resolve it. The tactics used by the Congress government in Punjab will hurt anyone who believes in democratic principles,” Nadda said in a tweet.
