The Union Cabinet today held its first physical meeting in more than a year.
Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held the first meeting with the Council of Ministers virtually after the Union Cabinet reshuffle on 7 July.
On Thursday, a day after the expansion of the Union Cabinet, the Prime Minister held frequent meetings with the Union Cabinet and the Council of Ministers.
In the meeting, sources had said that the Prime Minister had cautioned ministers against any complacency in the fight against COVID-19, saying that in the last few days, in crowded places and people without masks or social distancing. There have been pictures and videos roaming around “this should create a sense of fear in us”.
Sources said the prime minister said people not following the COVID-19 protocol were not a “pleasant sight”.
Today’s meeting comes two days after the Union government on Monday reconstituted cabinet committees.
Ministers including Bhupendra Yadav, Sarbananda Sonowal, Mansukh Mandaviya, Giriraj Singh and Smriti Irani were nominated to the all-important Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA).
The CCPA also includes Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. Huh. and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi.
The CCPA is one of the most important committees that decide on political strategy.
Law Minister Kiren Rijiju and Information and Broadcasting and Sports Minister Anurag in the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs Thakur Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda has been inducted as a member for the first time.
While Rijiju will replace Ravi Shankar Prasad in this committee, Thakur has replaced Prakash Javadekar. Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar has also been included in place of Thawar Chand Gehlot, who has recently taken over as the Governor of Karnataka.
The committee also includes Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Narendra Singh Tomar, Arjun Munda, Pralhad Joshi, Kiren Rijiju, and Anurag Singh Thakur.
Union ministers Arjun Ram Meghwal and V. Muraleedharan have been included in this committee as special invitees.
Another important inclusion is that of Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in the Cabinet Committee on Investment and Development.
Other members of the committee are Prime Minister Narendra Modi,Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Jairam Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman, Piyush Goyal, Narayan Tatu Rane, and Ashwini Vaishnaw.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs includes Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman, Narendra Singh Tomar, S Jaishankar, Piyush Goyal, and Dharmendra Pradhan.
The cabinet committee on housing includes Union Minister Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman, Piyush Goyal, and Hardeep Singh Puri.
In 2019, the reorganization of various parliamentary committees sparked controversy after Defense Minister Rajnath Singh was ousted from the premier CCPA. Later the government had to amend the structure of the CCPA to include Singh as the key decision-making body.
The monsoon session of Parliament is scheduled to begin on July 19 and end on August 13. (ANI)
