PM meets economists ahead of Union Budget

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met several prominent economists on Friday as his government prepares to present the Union Budget for 2023-24 amid global headwinds arising out of geopolitical tensions, sources said. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is going to present the Union Budget in the Lok Sabha on 1 February. The minister has already met various stakeholders to seek their views and suggestions for the budget.

Economists who attended the meeting included Shankar Acharya, Ashok Gulati and Shamika Ravi.

During the meeting, several suggestions were made by the economists to boost the economic growth, which is estimated to decline from 8.7 per cent in 2021-22 to 7 per cent in the current financial year.

The economy is facing several challenges, including persistently high inflation, depreciating rupee and slow growth in exports.
