PM Awas Yojana failed in Jharkhand village, farmer living under a tree for 5 years

Central and state governments have been making tall claims about housing for all the poor under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, but a different reality can be seen in Jharkhand’s Gumla district. Agapit Kerketa, a farmer of Biarwar Toli village of Bimarla Panchayat of Ghaghra block, has been making the tree his home since the house collapsed five years ago for the last five years. The administration has not helped this poor villager.

Agapit built a temporary shelter under a tree in the village. He cooks food with great difficulty. Even after applying under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and pleading in front of government officials several times, when Agapit did not get a house, he was forced to live like this.

Agapit Kerketa, a resident of Gumla, has two sons. However, due to poverty, both of them had left the village years ago and have not returned till now. According to a local woman, Agapit has brothers, but no one is willing to help her. People also claimed that there is a big difference between the government’s promises and reality.

Access to the administration is restricted due to Bimarla Panchayat being in a highly naxal affected area. A News18 reporter visited the area and listened to the problems of the local people. Villagers told that not a single beneficiary has been identified by the panchayat or block officials in this village under PM Awas Yojana.

When asked about the status of Agapit Kerketa, Block Development Officer Vishnu Dev revealed that he first came to know about it from News18 report. Dev said the house will be given soon after the panchayat sevak’s inquiry, but there is no explanation as to why the agapits are without a house for the last five years and what are the conditions for distribution under the PM Awas Yojana in the area. . .
