Pakistan vs Australia 1st Test Day 1 Live Scores & Updates: Australia will play for the Benaud-Qadir Trophy to mark their first cricket Test series in Pakistan in 24 years.
The Pakistan Cricket Board on Wednesday confirmed that the new trophy will be named to honor two legendary leg-spinners: Richie Benaud of Australia and Abdul Qadir of Pakistan.
Benaud led Australia to a 2–0 victory in their inaugural series in Pakistan in 1959 and, after retiring from Test cricket, became a widely renowned TV commentator. Qadir took 45 wickets in 11 Test matches against Australia.
“I am pleased to give my approval for Richie’s name to accompany Abdul Qadir in this trophy,” Benoud’s wife Daphne said in a statement issued by the PCB. “Richie had a lot of respect for Abdul and the fact that both were leg spinners and have a good ring to them.”
The PCB said that Cricket Australia has agreed to award the Benaud-Qadir Trophy at the end of each men’s Test series played between the two countries.
PCB chief executive Faisal Hasnain said there could be no better way to start the historic series than by naming the two “absolute legends and icons of this great game”.
Both the captains – Australia’s Pat Cummins and Pakistan’s Babar Azam – unveiled the trophy at the Pindi Cricket Stadium two days before the opening Test of the series.
“We really stand on the shoulders of these greats from the past who helped develop and popularize the game, and if my team can collect that trophy at the end of this series it will really be a true Test part. will be the end. This historic tour,” Cummins said.
Azam said that great cricketers like Benaud and Qadir should be recognized and because of such individuals and their legacy, the sport is healthy, prosperous and strong today.
Australia’s Test team last toured Pakistan in 1998. Pakistan has since hosted its “home” series against Australia at neutral venues.
