On this day in 2013: Jasprit Bumrah made his IPL debut, won the battle vs Virat Kohli

Jasprit Bumrah woke up the world for the first time on this day 9 years ago and took notice of him. Kids these days are trying to imitate Bumrah’s action but when he came on the scene with a unique load-up, the cricket fraternity was left shocked and speechless at the same time.

Jasprit Bumrah made his Indian Premier League debut for Mumbai Indians on 4 April 2013. Bumrah was included in the Mumbai Indians squad by former India head coach John Wright, who saw the Gujarat pacer’s talent during a West Zone T20 league match.

Bumrah helped raise a few eyebrows with pace and zip in his first outing for Mumbai Indian. Against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Bumrah took 3 for 32 in his 4 over spell.

Interestingly, Bumrah, on his IPL debut, won a duel with the then RCB captain Virat Kohli. Brought into the attack in the fourth over of RCB’s innings, Bumrah welcomed the IPL with 3 fours in his first 4 balls.

Bumrah gave Kohli plenty of breadth on all three occasions and the RCB captain happily accepted it.

However, Bumrah quickly adjusted. He goes outside the create and hits Kohli on his pads to skewer the ball. Bumrah laughed for the last time and cried for victory.

Bumrah took 2 more wickets in the match as he also got Mayank Agarwal and Karun Nair.

Bumrah played only 2 matches in his first IPL season. He played only 15 matches in the next 2 seasons but became an integral part of the Rohit Sharma-led team from 2016. Bumrah is one of the leading fast bowlers in all formats of the game not only in IPL but in international cricket. The MI pacer has taken 133 wickets in 108 matches in the T20 league.

Bumrah started his IPL 2022 campaign on a scary note, conceding 44 runs in just 3.3 overs in their defeat to Delhi Capitals. However, he bounced back with figures of 3/17 against Rajasthan Royals.

Bumrah’s build

Bumrah’s rise in international cricket is often attributed to his stint with Mumbai Indians. Some eyebrows were raised when he made his Test debut in South Africa in 2018 but the pacer always made sure that he proved his mettle in domestic cricket before becoming a regular with MI.

Bumrah owes his development as a fast bowler to the coaching set-up at Mumbai Indians.

He told R Ashwin, “When I reached Mumbai Indians, I had a set template for playing T20 cricket, which got me here.

“When I went there, Shane Bond and the Mumbai Indians set-up taught me how to plan and analyze for different batsmen. When I started, I had 2-3 deliveries. I don’t know I used to say ‘I’m going to throw this ball, you set the field accordingly because I didn’t know where the ball would be good because my accuracy was still in development’.

“But at MI, I started understanding these things, started planning on my own. I started studying my game. I realized that people are preparing for me, so I have things like that.” Those who are out of the course or out of consideration. Process of the batsman.
