On completion of 35 years of Mr India release, Satish Kaushik insists on its remake

In 1987, Indian cinema saw a breakthrough in cinematic storytelling and visual effects when Shekhar Kapur’s cult classic Mi… India hit the cinemas. The film starred Anil Kapoor as the unnamed invisible superhero opposite Sridevi. It became a huge success for a never-before-seen concept.

Helmed by the legendary Amrish Puri, the film’s villain, Mogambo is still regarded as one of the most iconic antagonists in Indian cinema.

Recently on 25th May Mr India completed 35 years of its release. Director and actor Satish Kaushik, who appeared in the film in the memorable role of comic character Calendar and also served as an associate director in the project, shared a post commemorating the film’s 35 years.

However, when the film industry was talking about a remake of the iconic film a few years back, Satish feels something else. An ETimes report quoted the actor-director as saying, “In my personal opinion, there are some films that should not be touched, be it for a remake or a sequel. Mr India is one such film which I feel should not be remade as it will not have that feel.”

Describing the film as a fine amalgamation of talents from Shekhar Kapur, Boney Kapoor and Javed Akhtar to cinematographer Baba Azmi, music composer Laxmikant Pyarelal and many more, he said that it was not possible to recreate the magic of the film once again. The veteran actor said, “It is an iconic film with such a great legacy that if it ever comes out again, it can only be pulled off by Anil Kapoor, and no actor.”

It may be mentioned that a few years back director Ali Abbas Zafar had announced a film titled Mr India, but he clarified that it was not in any way related to the 1987 classic.
