Intensivist Dr Rahul Pandit, another member of the task force, told The Times of India, “Still no official case of Omicron reinfection has been reported anywhere in India. But not following COVID-appropriate behavior after a recent COVID recovery is still not an option as no one knows the future Therefore, masking and physical distancing are essential to prevent any possible re-infection – whether from Omicron or another SARS-CoV-2 variant.”

The Karnataka government decided to lift the weekend curfew with an aim to control the spread of the COVID-19 infection. However, the night curfew will continue from 10 pm to 5 am every day. This comes as Karnataka on Thursday reported a huge spike in the number of Covid-19 cases.

Three large new studies from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlight the importance of getting a booster shot to provide the best protection against the Omicron coronavirus variant. Omicron currently accounts for over 99% of coronavirus cases in the United States. The study, released Friday, raises the question of whether people with just two vaccine doses should still be fully vaccinated. “I think we have to completely redefine vaccination as three doses,” Dr. William Schaffner, a longtime CDC vaccine consultant who was not involved in the study, told CNN.

Meanwhile, the Center said that the COVID vaccination, including the precautionary dose, for the laboratory-tested persons infected with the corona virus, will be deferred for three months after recovery. In a letter to all the States and Union Territories, Vikas Sheel, Additional Secretary, Union Health Ministry has said that requests have been received from various sectors for guidance regarding administration of precautionary doses to eligible persons with COVID disease. The suggestion is based on scientific evidence and the recommendation of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization.

On Friday, Maharashtra Minister for Social Justice and Special Assistance Dhananjay Munde directed officials to reopen the hostels of his department in coordination with municipal corporations and district administrations as classroom teaching was about to begin in the state’s schools from Monday. According to a government release, Munde has directed commissioners, disaster management department and chief executive officers of district councils in municipal areas to review the COVID-19 situation for reopening of schools, including residential and hostels.
