Obesity rate increased in India, know ways to avoid it

Obesity is one of the major health concerns that has been highlighted in India over the years. whereas India Overburdened by malnutrition, NFHS 5 shows that India is not far behind in obesity. According to NFHS 5, obesity rates in both adults and children have increased over the years. In the last five years, obesity has increased by 4 percent in both men and women in India. While it was 2.1 per cent in NFHS 4, child obesity has increased to 3.4 per cent in NFHS 5. This is a matter of concern in the nation as you too may suffer from obesity.

To prevent obesity in children

For proper physical and cognitive development, a baby should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months. They should not be given anything other than breast milk, not even water, for this period. Mother’s milk enhances immunity as well as fulfills their nutritional needs.

When introducing complementary foods after six months, babies should be given only fresh home-cooked food. Parents should avoid giving them biscuits, juices, colas, etc. as they are high in sugar and salt which leads to obesity.

Encourage eating only when you are hungry

If you’re too picky all the time, your child will pick up on that habit from you. You should also avoid overacting and ask your kids to do the same. Feed them only when they are hungry, not when they want to chew something.

To prevent obesity in adults

Processed foods contain unhealthy fats and are harmful to health along with weight gain. They contain high levels of salt and sugar which helps in no-nutrition and only flavor.

eat more vegetables and fruits

Vegetables and fruits are healthy, make you feel full, and even provide your body with plenty of nutrition. Having lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet keeps you from eating unhealthy snacks.

This is extremely important. Despite eating healthy, you may gain weight if you are not getting any exercise. To maintain a healthy weight one has to engage in some kind of physical activity.
