Veteran England fast bowler James Anderson has brushed off concerns about an injury affecting his participation in the one-off Test against Ireland and the Ashes series against Australia.

Anderson left the field last week during the Lancashire County Championship game with a minor groin strain.

There were concerns about his fitness with the Ashes round the corner but the fast bowler, who has been included in the squad for the match against Ireland, gave an update on his injury and said there was nothing to worry about. The Test against Ireland will be played at Lord’s from June 1 to 4.

Anderson told the BBC’s Tailenders podcast: “I’m not worried about it.

“Obviously it’s not good to be injured, but it’s probably the best result for what it is, because it’s a low grade thing and I think I’ll be back to full fitness in a few weeks,” he said.

“It’s frustrating because you always want to feel good and bowl enough before a series and you want to be fresh, so now trying to plan the best route through this summer.”

However, the 40-year-old pacer said it was not ideal as he needed some game time before the big summer. The Ireland Test starts on June 1 but although Anderson is in the squad, he does not want to rush things with the Ashes coming just after.

“I felt like I needed to play the game so it’s not ideal, but I’m not stressed about it.

“I’m taking it day by day and seeing how it goes because obviously I don’t want to risk anything by making it worse.

“I’m more confident that I can do it right [than in 2019] And give the Ashes a real good crack.”

The Ashes will be contested from June 16 to July 31, with Edgbaston, Lord’s, Headingley, Old Trafford and The Oval hosting the Tests.
