Tinseltown is buzzing with anticipation for the second installment of Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan to release on April 28, 2023. The first installment of the historical drama produced by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions was a cinematic marvel that took the audience on a breathtaking spree. Journey into the world of the Chola dynasty. And finally the wait is over.

The first installment of the film was a huge success, earning over Rs 400 crore at the box office. The original Tamil version of the film did exceptionally well in Tamil Nadu, but did not fare as well in the Hindi belt or Telugu-speaking states. Despite the stellar cast, the box office collections in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana were nothing short of disappointing. And this has led to frustration among the producers as no Telugu distributor is ready to buy the rights of the film there for its sequel.

Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 was also rejected by Telugu-speaking audiences on television. On Sunday, February 26, it aired on the popular Telugu channel Gemini TV with disastrous results. The team was shocked when it received a TRP rating of 2.17 for its television premiere. The makers are confident that the second installment will prove to be a game changer and will leave a lasting impression on the audience across India.

Meanwhile, Lyca Productions shared some exciting news with fans, announcing that the first single from Ponniyin Selvan 2 will be out soon. On Thursday evening, he took to Twitter and shared a BTS in a sweet hint that the song is about Kundhavai and the process behind the character’s transformation. The single will be a special treat for the fans as it features actress Trisha.

The tweet read, “Sharp tongue. Fierce mind Electricity house! Have you missed our eternal beauty? Look what happened in BTS as Trisha became Kundawai! First single coming soon! stay tuned.”

Both the films are based on the famous novel of the same name by Kalki Krishnamurthy, whose story is divided into two films. The production team of Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2 is hopeful that it will do better outside Tamil Nadu.
