No link between weight loss and fertility: Study

Many claims have been made that women in good shape have better chances of improving fertility. However, a new clinical study published in PLOS Medicine refutes these claims.

This randomized study was done on 379 women. The participants were divided into two groups, with the first half on a diet using meal replacements and increased physical activity. The other half had increased their physical activity without targeting weight loss. After completing their respective programs, they received three rounds of standard infertility treatment. The women in the first group lost 7 percent of their weight while the others maintained their weight.

However, no significant difference was recorded between the two groups in terms of healthy birth frequency. The intensive diet program had other benefits such as reduced metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome can increase the chances of diabetes, stroke and heart disease.

One of the researchers on this study, Daniel J. Hasenleder said that weight loss does not improve the chances of fertility. Heisenlader said infertility is a significant health problem. According to him, more studies will be needed to address this problem in the future.

Yet, according to experts, if a person is suffering from obesity, the chances of having a healthy child are less. According to The Indian Express, Dr Manjari Mehta has expressed that obesity can affect the level of fertility in both men and women. Dr. Mehta said that fat cells can convert male hormones into female hormones. According to him, eating healthy and maintaining a fit lifestyle is relevant for your body.

For couples who cannot conceive naturally, a lot of techniques have been devised of late to help them. Variations fall into categories:-

artificial insemination- Women are artificially impregnated with the sperms of their husbands.

embryo transferIf one woman cannot lay eggs, another woman can be inseminated with her husband’s sperm.

frozen material– Sperm, eggs and embryos can all be frozen and stored for long periods of time.
