Navjot Singh talks about ‘new friendship’, trade between Pakistan and India

New Delhi: During his visit to the visa-free Kartarpur Corridor for Sikh pilgrims on Tuesday, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu while offering prayers at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan on Saturday spoke of opening of “new friendship” and trade between the two countries.

Sidhu compared how Europe remained relatively peaceful after the two world wars.

“After the world wars in which millions of people died, if Europe can open borders on one-visa, one passport and one currency, then why don’t we have this region where we have figures like Bhagat Singh and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Who is revered by all?,” he said in a PTI report.

The report also stated that he, along with members of his delegation, had visited the gurdwara premises and offered langar made of wheat and vegetables from the fields, which was looked after by Guru Nanak Dev.

“The windows in the walls that were erected (between India and Pakistan) in 74 years need to be opened. Sidhu said that there should be trade between the two countries.

He also thanked Pakistan PM Imran Khan for taking the ‘first step’.

“I had already said that those supporting ‘langa’ (corridor) will be blessed and those opposing it have no value,” he said.

The 4 km long Kartarpur Corridor connects Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, known as Guru Nanak Dev, who founded Sikhism, with Dera Baba Nanak Temple in Gurdaspur district in the Indian state of Punjab.

The corridor was inaugurated by the Pak PM in 2019 to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak.
