Corona Crisis: Weekend curfews have been imposed in the capital Delhi and Karnataka from Friday in the midst of rapidly re-emerging cases of corona virus in the country, while Mumbai is also considering curfew here. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold a review meeting with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to review the COVID-19 situation in Maharashtra this evening.

Several states and union territories have already imposed night curfew or renewed security restrictions. While Odisha amended the guidelines and closed all its educational institutions, night curfew is being imposed in Chandigarh as well.

More than one lakh positive cases were registered in India a day after 214 days. The total registered till now has gone up to 3,52,26,386. This also includes cases of 3,007 Omicron variants reported from 27 states and union territories, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

Weekend curfew in capital Delhi

Delhi is preparing for a 55-hour weekend curfew from 10 pm on Friday. Movement of people will be restricted, except those involved in essential services and those falling under exempted categories. Those exiting will have to present an e-pass or a valid identity card issued by the government.

People can apply for e-pass for Weekend Curfew and Night Curfew at www.delhi.gov.in. Officials involved in essential and emergency services, people posted in the offices of diplomats of different countries as well as people holding constitutional posts will be allowed to move during the curfew on production of valid identity cards.

People arriving or departing from airports, railway stations and inter-state bus terminus will be allowed to travel on production of valid tickets. During the weekend curfew, only shops selling essential items like grocery, medical equipment, medicines will be allowed to open. Restaurants will remain closed but home delivery will be allowed.

Only home delivery of essential items will be allowed in the e-commerce sector. Public parks and gardens will remain closed during the curfew. Only 20 people will be allowed to go to the wedding ceremony and funeral. Officials say that DTC buses and metro trains will run with 100 percent seating capacity and standing passengers will not be allowed.

Weekend curfew in Karnataka too

In Karnataka too, there will be a weekend curfew from 10 pm on Friday to 5 am on Monday. Weekend and night curfew has been extended for two weeks. The state government also decided to close schools and pre-university colleges for two weeks, except for class 10th and 12th.

All essential services will continue. Less than 200 people will be allowed in marriages only in open spaces and less than 100 people in marriage halls. Pubs, bars, cinema halls and malls should also have 50 percent occupancy, while staff and hosts should be fully vaccinated with two doses. Also, the state government has made it mandatory for those coming to the state from Maharashtra, Kerala and Goa to bring negative RT-PCR reports.

Shutdown in Tamil Nadu tomorrow on 9th January

While night curfew has been imposed in Tamil Nadu from 10 pm to 5 am from Thursday, there will be a shutdown on Sunday, January 9, and only 50 per cent of the capacity will be allowed in buses, suburban trains and metro rail.

All government and privately organized harvest festivals and cultural programs have been postponed. Amusement and amusement parks will remain closed. Public will not be allowed at places of worship on three days in a week (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).

Brainstorming continues on weekend curfew in Mumbai

Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a review meeting on the Kovid-19 situation with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray through video conferencing today. Pednekar said that no decision has been taken on the weekend curfew yet.

Night curfew in Chandigarh, many restrictions

Night curfew has been imposed in Chandigarh from Friday, while all educational institutions including schools, colleges, universities and coaching classes will remain closed.

According to an official order, under the Night Curfew, the movement of persons for all non-essential activities will be restricted between 10 pm and 5 am. The new restrictions will remain in force until further notice. However, emergency services, medical health, transportation of essential goods, operation of multiple shifts in industries will also be applicable with many conditions. All bars, cinema halls, multiplexes, malls, restaurants, spas, museums will be allowed to operate at 50 percent capacity, provided all employees are fully vaccinated.

Any event should be limited to 50 persons indoors and 100 persons for outdoors. However, the total number of persons in both indoor and outdoor gatherings should not exceed 50 per cent of the capacity.

Slight modification in curfew rules in Odisha

The Odisha government has also decided to extend the night curfew by one hour and has closed offline classes up to class 12th. The new restrictions will be in effect from 5 a.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. on February 1. Night curfew will now be imposed from 9 pm to 5 am in all urban areas instead of 10 pm to 5 am. Only essential activities will be allowed during Night Curfew.

The government has limited the number of guests at weddings and thread ceremonies to 100. Both government and private offices will run with 50 percent capacity. Cinema halls will be able to run with a maximum capacity of 50 percent. Similarly, hotels and bars will be allowed to operate with 50 per cent seating capacity and street vendors can remain open till 9 pm.
