Travis McMichael, 35, and his father, Gregory McMichael, 66, were sentenced on Friday to life in prison for the brutal murder of black American jogger Ahmaud Arbery. Another accused, William “Roddy” Bryan, 52 – a neighbor of the McMichaels – was sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole.
The trio were convicted in November on multiple counts of murder, aggravated assault and false imprisonment.
The three killed Ahmed Arbery after following him on their pickup trucks near Brunswick in Georgia in February 2020. The father-son duo with William Bryan followed Arbery as he strolled through the Satilla Shores neighborhood, accusing him of theft without evidence. The law enforcement agency in Georgia failed to make arrests for several months, but a leaked video of the incident sparked national outrage and added to the anger of Americans who were already urging racial justice in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death.
“He apparently left his home to run and it saved his life,” Georgia Superior Court Judge Timothy Walmsley was quoted by AFP news agency. According to a report in the news agency, he also said that it was a tragedy on “many, many levels”.
“Each one of them has no remorse and does not deserve any leniency. AFP news agency quoted Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, as saying that they chose to target my son because they did not want him in their community. He also said that the murder was not a case of mistaken identity.

- Travis McMichael, his father, and retired police officer Gregory McMichael were not charged for several months. He claimed he made a ‘civilian arrest’ – at the time permitted in the state of Georgia – when initially charged with Arbery’s murder. The jury, which was mostly white, rejected that argument.
- Local law enforcement also halted a murder investigation in the early months following Arbery’s murder. Local prosecutor Jackie Johnson was charged with obstructing the investigation into Arbery’s death. He was charged with violating his oath of office.
- William “Roddy” Bryan, the second man charged with the father-son duo, will be eligible for parole after 30 years. Brian cooperated with the police. He also shot a graphic video that captured Arbery’s murder.
- Brian and the McMichaels stop Arbery jogging while the latter tries to escape. They stopped him using their pickup trucks and Travis McMichael arrested him.
- Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represented Arberis, believes the three would not have been prosecuted if there had been no continued pressure from the community.
