Despite getting third division in class 9th and 10th and failing in all subjects except Hindi in class 12th, Manoj Kumar Sharma never gave up on his dreams.

There is a general belief that IAS-IPS officers are generally academically inclined from an early age. However, now we come across the story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, an IPS officer who was not interested in academics. Not only this, his family was also struggling with financial crisis. Despite facing many hurdles, he eventually succeeded in becoming an IPS officer. Every year, the Union Public Service Examination (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination, which is considered one of the most challenging exams to crack. It is rare for candidates to succeed in their first attempt, some fail in the interview even after clearing the written test, while others clear both in their first attempt. Some candidates refuse to give up on their aspirations to crack the exam even after multiple attempts.

Manoj Kumar Sharma is one such person who cracked the UPSC exam in his fourth attempt. Despite getting third division in class 9th and 10th and failing in all subjects except Hindi in class 12th, Sharma never gave up on his dream. Author Anurag Pathak has written a biography about Sharma’s life titled “Twelfth Fail”.

Growing up in poverty and spending nights on the street with beggars, Sharma faced many obstacles in his life. He worked in a library in Delhi and it proved to be the right decision for him. He read books about liberation from various famous authors ranging from Maxim Gorky and Abraham Lincoln, which helped him to understand the meaning and purpose of life.

He made three unsuccessful attempts to clear the UPSC exam before he was successful in his fourth attempt. He joined Maharashtra cadre as IPS in 2005 and is currently serving as Additional Commissioner, West Zone in Mumbai.

Shraddha Joshi, who was Sharma’s classmate in childhood, is now his wife and has been a valuable source of support in his journey to crack the UPSC exam. They both met for the first time when they were in class 12th and though he was initially hesitant to confess his love, he later proposed to her and they got married.
