Manipur violence: Days after violent clashes broke out in the northeastern state, Manipur Chief Minister along with four members of his cabinet on Sunday went to Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the situation. Life in Manipur is slowly moving towards normalcy and amid the prevailing normalcy, the issue of the ongoing Suspension of Operation (SOO) with the insurgent organizations of the state is also likely to be discussed.

CM N Biren Singh is accompanied by four cabinet ministers; Th Biswajit, Y Khemchand, K Govinddas and Th Prasanth. According to sources, BJP state president A Sharda Devi also accompanied Singh to Delhi.

On 3 May, a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in 10 hill districts, in protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. After which violent clashes took place in the northeastern state. Tensions over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserved forest land led to earlier clashes, which led to several smaller agitations.

According to a PTI report, Meites constitute about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and mostly live in the Imphal Valley. The tribals – Naga and Kuki – constitute another 40 per cent of the population and reside in the hill districts. Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday said 60 people were killed, 231 injured and 1,700 houses, including religious places, were gutted in the caste violence in the northeastern state over the past few days.
