The goons also indulged in heavy brick batting at the girl’s family members and other locals when they rushed to rescue them. The police identified the deceased as Sanjay Balmiki.
According to reports, Sanjay Balmiki, a civic worker, used to live with the family in Kachchi Basti area close to DBS College. Sanjay’s brother Kamal told media persons that on Tuesday night, some boys of the area had molested their niece living in the same locality.
When their mother and other family members protested, the accused threatened them of dire consequences.
On coming to know about the development, Sanjay reached the spot and tried to check the goons. However, the accused, who were armed with ‘chapar’, knife and sword, beat up Sanjay mercilessly by pinning him on the ground. They then attacked him with sharp-edged weapons, leaving him critically wounded. He was taken to hospital where doctors declared him dead.
“Several teams have been formed and dispatched to the possible hideouts to make the arrest of the accused, including the main accused identified as Vishal, possible. Also, investigation is being carried out to work out the exact details of the case,” said ADCP (South) Manish Sonker.
