Reportedly, Ayesha in the Manju Warrier starring role has won an award at the Oman International Film Festival.

M Jayachandran won an award for the film’s scintillating background score at the prestigious Oman International Film Festival. His Excellency Sayyid Ibrahim bin Said bin Ibrahim Al Busaidi, Governor of Musandam, presented the award at the closing ceremony of the ceremony. Directed by Amir Pallikal, Ayesha is essentially a biopic of Nilambur Ayesha, the first Muslim woman from Kerala to be a part of the performing arts – films and plays.

Manju Warrier’s Ayesha Nilambur portrays the struggles of Ayesha. The veteran theater artiste was also attacked on stage because she was a Muslim woman in a male-dominated field.

This Malayalam-Arabic bilingual film pays tribute to the great actor and theater artist beautifully.

Written by Asif Kakkadi and produced by Zakaria Mohammed, Ayesha uses cinematic liberties to flesh out Manju Warrier’s character. The film tries to emphasize that how Nilambur Ayesha moves forward despite many challenges.

Nilambur Ayesha was married at the age of 14. But soon she got separated from her husband and started living her life as a single mother. Ayesha acted in several socially transformative political dramas supported by the Communist Party in Kerala. This was the time when men portrayed female characters on stage.

Nilambur Ayesha was then forced to move to Saudi Arabia where she worked as a domestic help for several years, after which she returned to Kerala. In 1953, 18-year-old Nilambur Ayesha was shot while performing on stage. Although the bullet did not hit her, it is said that she was attacked because it was considered unacceptable for a Muslim woman to pursue the performing arts. This incident is referenced verbally in Manju Warrier’s film.

Manju Warrier’s Ayesha released in theaters worldwide on January 20 and did decent business at the box office.
