Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced on International Women’s Day that women government employees in the state would be allowed additional casual leave (CL) of seven days every year. The decision seeks to highlight the important role of women in various fields including parenthood.

Chouhan said that parenting is the most important role of women while contributing equally in all other areas. As a result, we have decided to provide additional casual leave of seven days to all women employees.

Chouhan also said that girl students who have passed class 10 examination will be given financial literacy classes as well as skill training in areas like handloom, embroidery and traditional folk handicrafts to help them earn a living.

In January, the Kerala government issued a decree granting menstrual leave to female students enrolled in state-run higher education institutions. The government reduced the attendance requirement for female students in semester examinations from 75% to 73%. Several countries such as the United Kingdom, China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Spain and Zambia have previously made provisions for menstrual leaves. Since 1992, women government employees in Bihar are entitled to two days of special menstrual leave every month.

The new policy of Madhya Pradesh aims to create a more gender-inclusive and conducive work environment for women. This recognition of women’s contribution to society, as well as an effort to provide them with the support and opportunities they need to succeed, are important milestones towards gender equality.
