Lata Mangeshkar’s health improves slightly, singer still in ICU

Renowned singer Lata Mangeshkar, who was admitted to the ICU after contracting COVID-19 earlier this month, will still be in the intensive care unit, however, she is already showing positive signs of improvement. “Lata didi is already showing positive signs of improvement and is undergoing treatment in the ICU with an amazing team of doctors led by Dr Pratate Samdani. We are looking forward and praying for his speedy recovery and return home,” his family friend Anusha Srinivasan Iyer said in a statement.

She also shared an update from Mangeshkar’s official Twitter handle, which read, “My heartfelt request to stop the disturbing speculations. Update from Dr Pratt Samdani of Breach Candy Hospital. Lata didi is already showing positive signs of improvement and is being treated in ICU. We wish and pray for his speedy recovery and return home.”

Earlier, Iyer urged fans to pray for his speedy recovery. India Today quoted him as saying, “Let us all pray for his speedy recovery and return home.”

The 92-year-old singer tested positive for coronavirus with mild symptoms and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Breach Candy Hospital in south Mumbai on January 8.

On Wednesday, Anusha Srinivasan confirmed that the singer is stable. “Lata Di is stable. Will come home after doctors’ approval,” Iyer told news agency PTI. Mangeshkar’s condition was said to have deteriorated two days ago and the spokesperson then termed the news as false.

Considered one of the greatest singers of Indian cinema, Mangeshkar received Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 2001.

She is also the recipient of several other awards including Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Awards and several National Film Awards.
