Karnataka: Over 100 banks in Tumakuru forced to sleep on road as 35 houses sealed Mangaluru News – Times of India

Tumakuru: Over 100 residents, including elderly, infants, children, women and new mothers, spent Tuesday night on the road amid heavy rains in Tumakuru.
Residents of 35 houses on rent and lease in Banashankari area were evicted after officials of two banks sealed their houses as their landlord, TL. manjunathi, had failed to repay its debts. The affected include street vendors, panipuri vendors, vegetable vendors, domestic workers, construction workers and daily wage workers.
“I was not present when the bank sent the residents out and sealed the houses. I have borrowed Rs 15 lakh from a nationalized bank and Rs 55 lakh from a co-operative bank and have an outstanding balance of Rs 19 lakh and Rs 35 lakh respectively.
Manjunath said he had requested the banks to clear the dues for some time and as Wednesday was a government holiday, he had said that he would make the payment on Thursday.
Lakshmi, a tenant and daily wage laborer in an oil mill, said she had paid Rs 2,10,000 as deposit and was living in the house on lease for two years. A widow, Lakshmi lives with her son who is studying in college, and his mother, Hemavathi. “Last night we were forced to stay out of our homes as bank officials had sealed them. It was raining heavily and we didn’t even have a bed sheet to sleep outside the house. My mother got wet in the rain and is suffering from fever. I don’t even have money to buy medicine for him,” she said.
B Vasant, another PU student, told TOI, “All my books are indoors and I have my monthly exam on Thursday and I can’t go to college.”
Shekhar, a tailor who has been living in a rented house for the last three months, told that he spent the night on the road with his wife, son and 10-month-old girl. Shekhar said that some people have gone to the houses of friends and neighbours. “Bank officials sealed homes by sending women, children and elderly people out while we went to work,” he said.
Vegetable seller Manjamma said, ‘My daughter is studying’ SSLC. I cannot send him to school as his uniform and books are inside a sealed house.”
