Vaccines can reduce the suffering from the infection but cannot prevent the disease in all cases,” said Dr Anoop Kumar Burman, director of medical education.
Health department sources said the change in the virus strain may have made the vaccine somewhat ineffective. “The structure of the virus changes frequently. It is a common occurrence for them to survive,” said a health official. “The mortality rate is high in Assam, but people who were vaccinated with both doses have also died in Assam,” he said.
