He was 75 years old. Sharad Yadav’s health was going bad for a long time. He was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Delhi on Thursday evening when his condition worsened.

He passed away at 9 pm. Many leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nitish Kumar, Lalu Yadav, Deputy CM of Bihar Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of Opposition Vijay Sinha have expressed grief over his death.

Sharad Yadav has been among those leaders who stayed with both Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar. Sharad Yadav got isolated after political relations with Nitish Kumar deteriorated.

Due to being seriously ill, his political activities had also reduced considerably.

Was a Union minister in the Vajpayee government
Sharad Yadav had served as a minister in various portfolios in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government between 1999 and 2004. In 2003, Sharad Yadav became the president of Janata Dal United (JDU).

He was also the convenor of NDA. In the year 2018, after separating from JDU, the Democratic Janata Dal (LJD) was formed. Last year, he had announced the merger of his party with RJD.

Born in Narmadapuram, first became MP from Jabalpur in 1974
Sharad Yadav was mainly a resident of Babai village located in Narmadapuram (Hoshangabad) district of Madhya Pradesh. He was born on 1 July 1947 in a farmer’s family.

When he was studying engineering in Jabalpur in 1971, he got interested in politics. Here he was elected president of the student union. There was no looking back after becoming the student union president.

Was influenced by Ram Manohar Lohia
Sharad Yadav was topper in student politics as well as in writing. He won Gold Medal in BE ‘Civil’. He was influenced by the ideas of Ram Manohar Lohia in politics. He often used to participate in Lohia’s movements.

During this he was arrested several times under ‘Misa’. He had to go to jail in 1970, 72 and 75. Sharad Yadav also played an important role in implementing the recommendations of the Mandal Commission.

His political career started from student politics, but in active politics he contested for the first time in 1974 from Jabalpur Lok Sabha seat. This seat was vacated by the demise of Hindi Sevi Seth Govinddas.

This was the time of JP movement. JP made him its first candidate from Jabalpur as Haldar Kisan. Sharad managed to win this seat and reached the Parliament House for the first time. After this, in the year 1977 also he was elected MP from the same seat.

He was also made the President of Yuva Janata Dal. After this he was elected to the Rajya Sabha in the year 1986.

Has won the Lok Sabha elections from three states
Sharad Yadav is probably the first leader of India who has won the Lok Sabha elections from three states. In 1989, three years after going to the Rajya Sabha, he contested and won the Badaun Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. Yadav was a Union Minister till 1989-90.

He was entrusted with the Ministry of Textiles and Food Processing. After UP, his entry takes place in Bihar. In 1991, he became a Member of Parliament from the Madhepura Lok Sabha seat in Bihar. After this, he was elected the working president of Janata Dal in 1995 and in the year 1996, he became MP for the 5th time. In 1997, he was elected the National President of Janata Dal.

After this, in 1999, he was given the charge of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and on July 1, 2001, he was elected cabinet minister in the Union Ministry of Labour.

In 2004, he became a Rajya Sabha MP for the second time. In 2009, he became the MP for the 7th time, but in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he had to face defeat from the Madhepura seat.
