IRCTC Alert! Indian Railways to resume on-board catering services, will soon provide bed linens and blankets

Indian Railways is likely to resume on-board catering services and other facilities for passengers soon. According to reports, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), which provides services like ticketing and tourism services to the Indian Railways, is expected to restore on-board catering services and other facilities soon.

According to IRCTC sources, the Railways is contemplating resuming services that were suspended in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Sources further claimed that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav will convene a meeting next week to take a decision on resumption of services related to onboard kitchen and catering services, providing bedrolls and blankets.

The decision to resume such services is likely to be due to the high demand of passenger trains for these basic amenities of passengers and even railway personnel.

From March 2020, the Railways had suspended the food catering business and other services, such as providing bedrolls, blankets, in view of the escalation in the COVID-19 pandemic-triggered lockdown. The employment of lakhs of people has also been affected due to the stoppage of catering services.

Later, in August 2021, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Cooperation (IRCTC) resumed e-catering services.

According to the report, the Railways had also conducted a survey regarding its catering services. The survey conducted among 20,000 travelers found that 80% preferred cooked food over packaged food.

More than 500 restaurants are available on IRCTC website including Comsum, Domino’s, RailRestro, Zoop, Railfood, Garg Rajdhani Online Food, Yatri, Rail Recipes.

How to order food through IRCTC official website:

  • Visit the IRCTC eCatering official website www.ecatering.irctc.co.in/
  • Enter your ten digit PNR number and click on the arrow to proceed
  • Select food from the list of cafes, outlets and quick service restaurants available there.
  • Place the order and select the payment mode. Either, you can choose to pay online or pay cash on delivery.
  • Once the order is placed, the food will be delivered to your seat/berth.
