The council said that AICTE approved universities and institutions should give information about the reservation policy implemented in the last three years on a priority basis.

All India technical council Education (AICTE) has directed universities and institutions imparting technical education to implement a reservation policy for faculty and staff appointments. The apex body of educational institutions imparting technical education said that all AICTE-affiliated universities and institutions will have to give information about the reservation policy implemented in the last three years on a priority basis.

“All AICTE-approved institutions must follow the reservation policy of the state or central government. Information regarding appointment of manpower including faculty with respect to the reservation policy implemented in the last 3 years is required to be provided on top priority basis so as to inform the National Commission for Backward Classes,” reads the official notice.

The notice in this regard was issued after the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) sent a letter to the AICTE regarding the implementation of the reservation policy in the appointment of faculty and staff. AICTE circular has been issued to all Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities and all Directors/Principals of approved institutions.

Meanwhile, engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu have asked the AICTE to relax norms and allow faculty from Electrical Engineering (EEE) and Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) branches to teach Computer Science Engineering (CSE) courses. Shortage of qualified teachers. As per the norms of AICTE, only teachers having Post Graduate (PG) degree in computer science related branches can take classes for CSE courses.

Last year, almost half the students opted for CSE, IT, AI and Data Science as well as Machine Learning courses. However, due to the huge demand for BE, B.Tech graduates in the last few years, only a few of them opted for ME, M.Tech courses in computer science branches.

Faculty shortage could hit 20 to 30 per cent this year, and it could widen next year as colleges increase their intake in computer-related branches due to rising demand, a leading news daily reported.
