Himachal Pradesh Sports Minister Vikramaditya Singh is holding meetings to ensure speedy disbursement of cash awards to medal winners of 2022 Commonwealth Games and National Games.

Drawing inspiration from Haryana, which has a record of producing top sportspersons in sports, Himachal Pradesh is planning to study the sports policy of its neighboring state to implement new ideas in the hill state. State Sports Minister Vikramaditya Singh has directed his department to study Haryana’s sports policy for new ideas so that they can be replicated in Himachal.

“The state has excelled in the field of sports and probably has the best sports policy in the country. I have instructed the officials to study the Haryana model and select those indicators which can be implemented here.

The Sports Minister is holding a meeting with officials to ensure early disbursement of cash prizes to medal winners. Himachal is yet to offer cash awards to medal winners of 2022 Commonwealth Games and National Games.

Singh said the ministry would propose to have a separate head for disbursement of monetary awards to ensure that there is no delay. “There is a delay as the matter is to be taken up with the Finance Department. To ensure that the cash award is given immediately, we will propose that a separate head be created under which part of the budget for this purpose. This will expedite the entire process,” said the minister.

He further said that he would request the Chief Minister to increase the allocation for sports in the upcoming budget. “We need to build infrastructure which will require more capital expenditure and funds. We will reach out to industries, private companies and hydropower projects for funds under CSR initiatives.”

Singh said the hill state has potential for winter sports, so his department is also looking at introducing sports like skiing, mountaineering and snowboarding, which are available in Manali, in other parts of the state.

“We will explore the possibility of organizing winter sports in Chansal Valley in collaboration with the tourism department,” he said.
