The bell on INS Vikrant has been put back on the Made-in India aircraft carrier.

Indian Navy’s first warship INS Vikrant has got the bell back. The bell was part of the Indian Navy for 36 years from 1961. Now she has been reverted to Made-in India Aircraft Carrier. The bell was first installed on INS Vikrant in 1961, when India bought the British-origin aircraft carrier HMS Hercules and renamed it Indian.

According to Navy officials, the bell was earlier on INS Vikrant, which continued to function till 1997. Later the bell was removed and kept at the residence of the Vice Chief of the Navy.

Retired Vice Admiral returned
Navy officials pointed out that bells have traditionally played an important role on warships. They help in signaling time to sailors and officers performing various duties and also during emergencies. Last month on March 22, retired Vice Admiral SN Ghormade of the Navy returned the bell to INS Vikrant. He decided to return the bell because the Navy got its first ‘Made-in-India’ indigenous aircraft carrier.

This will serve a better purpose of inspiring the youth about their ship and the rich history of the Indian Navy.

Engaged on important aircraft carriers during the war
The bell has been part of a glorious history as it was on the warship that played a key role in bombing Pakistan and jamming the Karachi port in 1971. The aircraft carrier was very active during the wars fought against Pakistan and was deployed at key locations to further the security of the nation.

The new warship INS Vikrant was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 2 last year in Kochi. It is the country’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier.
