India’s Lieutenant General Mohan Subramaniam appointed as UN Force Commander in South Sudan

India’s Lieutenant General Mohan Subramaniam has been appointed as the Force Commander in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment on 5 July. Subramaniam will succeed Lieutenant General Shailesh Tinikar of India.

About 20,000 peacekeepers work with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan to protect civilians and build lasting peace in the conflict-hit country.

Civilians, police and military personnel from 73 countries perform a number of duties under mandates provided by the United Nations Security Council.

A total of 1,160 peacekeepers from India Currently serving in Upper Nile State. Indian engineering troops have also rehabilitated major roads in the state, including the 75-km stretch from Malakal to Abvong.

The Indian team here has also been appreciated for capacity building of local communities and providing medical treatment to humans and animals. The team is also well known and loved for its continuously running veterinary clinics in various parts of Upper Nile State.

Veterinary services have been provided to thousands of cows, goats, donkeys, sheep and other animals which are rarely available to the cattle ranchers in the country. Recently, veterinarians treated at least 1,749 animals at the ranch – in just two days.

UNMISS peacekeepers also work to facilitate humanitarian aid such as food, clean water, shelter and healthcare, which is needed by millions across South Sudan. It also aims to provide a safe and supportive environment so that displaced people can live safely and with dignity in their homes and communities.

The mission also monitors, investigates, validates and reports violations and violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, including those that may constitute war crimes or crimes against humanity. The focus is on abuse against children and women, including all forms of sexual and gender-based violence.

Lt Gen Subramaniam has a distinguished military career with the Indian Army spanning over 36 years. Most recently, he served as the General Officer Commanding, Military Region (Operational and Logistics Readiness Zone) in Central India, contributing to the Army’s operational and logistics preparedness.

Prior to this, he has served as Additional Director General for Procurement and Equipment Management at Integrated Headquarters (2019-2021), Strike Infantry Division (2018-2019), Deputy General Officer Commanding, Integrated Headquarters (2019-2021), Ministry of Defense (Army) . Commander of Infantry Division (2015-2016) and Mountain Brigade (2013-2014) among other appointments within the Indian Armed Forces.

He also served as India’s Defense Attache in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia (2008–2012) and as a staff officer with the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone in 2000.
