Indicating continued economic recovery, government data shows India’s electricity consumption is set to reach 112.81 billion units in November 2022, a double-digit growth of 13.6 per cent over the year-ago period.

The strong growth in electricity consumption in the month mainly indicates a pick-up in economic activity as it usually remains sluggish in November.

Experts say that electricity consumption and demand will increase further in the coming months, especially due to the use of heating equipment in the northern part of the country, and economic activity will improve further due to the start of the new rabi crop season .

Farmers use electricity to run tube wells to irrigate new crops. In November last year, power consumption stood at 99.32 billion units (BU), higher than 96.88 BU in the same month of 2020, the data showed.

Peak electricity demand met, which is the highest supply in a day, rose to 187.38 gigawatts (GW) last month.

The peak power supply was 166.10 GW in November 2021 and 160.77 GW in November 2020.

The peak power demand was 155.32 GW in November 2019, the period before the pandemic.

The power consumption in November 2019 stood at 93.94 BU.

Experts say the strong growth in electricity consumption in November indicates a continued recovery. They also believe that in view of further improvement in industrial and commercial activities across the country, there will be a high growth in power consumption as well as demand in the coming months.
