Set to post 240 for victory, South Africa nearly made 118 for two, with Elgar remaining unbeaten on 46 after facing 121 balls in a three-hour test of his skill and resolve.

Elgar, a left-hander, was hit on the neck by a Jasprit Bumrah delivery and Shardul Thakur on the right hand, with both injuries requiring treatment on the field.

South Africa got off to a great start, with Aiden Markram scoring 31 off 38 balls in the opening stand of 47 runs with Elgar.

But Markram fell before wicket to first-innings bowling hero Thakur, who won the decision from umpire Marais Erasmus after two unsuccessful appeals in the same over.

Run-scoring became increasingly difficult, with uneven bounce becoming more of a factor as the sun went down on a pitch that helped the fast bowlers throughout the match.

But it was off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin who achieved the second breakthrough when he dismissed Keegan Pietersen for 28 with a total of 93 in front of his stumps.

After losing the first Test at Centurion, South Africa need a win to keep the series alive ahead of next week’s third and final Test in Cape Town.

With only six recognized batsmen in their line-up, Thursday is likely to have a tense end.
