Set to post 240 for victory, South Africa nearly made 118 for two, with Elgar remaining unbeaten on 46 after facing 121 balls in a three-hour test of his skill and resolve.
Elgar, a left-hander, was hit on the neck by a Jasprit Bumrah delivery and Shardul Thakur on the right hand, with both injuries requiring treatment on the field.
South Africa got off to a great start, with Aiden Markram scoring 31 off 38 balls in the opening stand of 47 runs with Elgar.
