After being delayed twice due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the 2021 edition of the SAFF Championship began in Maldives on 1 October. The five participating countries are India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the host Maldives. This year’s edition will see no participation of Bhutan and Pakistan in the Premier Football Championship. Bhutan reluctantly refrained from participating in allowing players to travel internationally, while Pakistan was suspended by FIFA for violating FIFA statues. As a result, the qualification method has been changed to a round-robin format, which will see the top two teams advance to the final.
Indian football team India will begin its SAFF Championship 2021 campaign against Bangladesh on Monday, 4 October at Male National Stadium in Maldives at 04:30 PM IST. Notably all the matches of the tournament will be played at one place.
The Blue Tigers have been the most successful nation in the championship, having won the tournament on seven occasions. With the team winning thrice in the last five editions, they will be aiming to make a great start to the tournament and consolidate their position as favourites.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh started their campaign with a 1-0 win over Sri Lanka. Bengal Tigers have a lot of momentum and will have to fight for three points here. They will also seek revenge as they lost against the Blue Tigers in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in June this year. A win in today’s contest would automatically increase their odds to advance to the final.
