The Indian Test team could be selected in a day or two, with the selectors mulling over who should be handed over the reins in the absence of the regular captain. Virat Kohli Who is likely to be rested from the start of the Kanpur Test series against New Zealand later this month. Kohli, along with several other senior members of the Test team, will be given a much-needed break from April this year by being part of various bio-bubbles.

With Rohit Sharma appointed as the captain of India’s T20I team, the team think-tank is contemplating whether he should also lead in the Kanpur Test despite Ajinkya Rahane being the designated vice-captain. One of the major reasons behind this is the steady improvement in Rohit’s credentials as a leader, with some suggesting that he has been left to focus on his batting alone with Kohli.

In the past when Kohli missed a Test, a rare occurrence, Rahane stuffed his shoes. But his indifferent form with the bat combined with Rohit’s stature means that the latter could be handed the captaincy for the first Test set to be played from November 25 at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.

The concerns raised by Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and new head coach Rahul Dravid followed concerns that the BCCI could be missing several Test regulars from the squad for the two-Test series, with a report claiming that the BCCI is managing the players’ workload.

Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Shami and Shardul Thakur can be rested. However, Kohli will return and take over the captaincy for the second and final Test to be played in Mumbai.

After the New Zealand series, the Indian team will leave for South Africa in the second week of December.
