Stuart Broad had a lot to celebrate in the opening days of the fifth day India vs England Test when he dismissed Mohammed Shami. With the wicket of the Indian pacer, the veteran English bowler completed 550 Test wickets to confirm his status as one of the greatest bowlers of all time in Test cricket. But little did the 36-year-old know that he would soon end up with another kind of record.
James Anderson cleaned up centurion Ravindra Jadeja for 104 with the second new ball, leaving India below the last pair of No. 10 Mohammad Siraj and No. 11 and India captain Jasprit Bumrah. It was time for an early finish for England and Broad opted to test Bumrah with a few minor tweaks – something the England pacer had worked on against Shami as well as early on Day 2. Broad bowls a short to Bumrah, who manages to get his bat. Hook up and delivery. Zak Crowley made the wrong decision and let one go through. What happened next was a complete meltdown from Broad.

By the end of the over – the 84th of the Indian innings – India had crossed the 400-run mark and Bumrah, who was 0 off seven balls at the start of the over, had made 29 for just 14. Here’s How the Over Was Out
- 83.1 – Four! Shortly away from Zak Crowley’s outstretched hands. Maybe his fingers got bitten off. Short and on middle, Bumrah hits his pull to the fine leg. Crowley runs to his left, makes a sliding attempt to catch him but in vain.
- 83.2 – Five Wide! India will happily take these extras. Stuart Broad hits it short and it goes over the batsman and the leaping keeper for a boundary.
- 83.2 – Six! And it is a no ball even for overstepping. Precious runs for India. Short again, around middle, Jasprit Bumrah attempts another pull shot but it takes it to the top edge and flies over fine leg.
- 83.2 – Four! India is now close to 400. Stuart Broad’s idea was right but not implemented. Targets for a yorker but it turns out to be a full toss, Bumrah hits it at long on for a boundary.
- 83.3 – Four! 400 Arrives for India! Bumrah is becoming the master of the edge. It is on a length and around it, Jasprit Bumrah attempts a big hev on the leg side but it takes the inner edge, hits the stumps and speeds it towards the fine leg fence.
- 83.4 – Four! Bumrah has sent one more over the fence. Back of a length, around leg, Jasprit Bumrah hits it across the line, falls in the process but still finds the fence at square leg.
- 83.5 – Six! 34 runs in the very first over with one more ball. Here Broad is being reminded of Yuvraj Singh. Short again, around leg, Jasprit Bumrah goes inside the crease and smokes it over fine leg for maximum.
- 83.6- And Bumrah will strike! The crowd roars. Smart batting from the captain. Broad bowls a yorker for a bar, Bumrah digs it into the pitch and runs to the other end. Siraj replies and puts up a dive as Broad scores a direct hit on the striker’s end. It is sent up for a run out but Siraj is safe in the replays. From 35 overs – Most expensive over in the history of Test cricket. Wow! Is it run out? Mohammad Siraj moves towards the end of the batting for a sharp single as Stuart Broad goes straight into the hit. The third umpire is called and replays show that Siraj has been saved by a desperate dive. not out!
