SL Team News

Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Rangana Herath, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekara and Thisara Perera have all hung up their shoes. His ranking fell and as a result, he found himself in the first round of the showpiece instead of getting a straight spot in the Super 12 stage.

As if losing their stalwarts wasn’t enough, Sri Lanka are also battling a year-long suspension of artists such as Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka for breaking the bio-secure bubble in England.

This means 24-year-old Charit Aslanka, who was player of the series in their recent ODI series win over South Africa, Avishka Fernando, Kamindu Mendis and seamer Chamika Karunaratne will have to play a key role.

The return of Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Perera will certainly ease Dasun Shanaka’s captaincy. Sri Lanka also have top wrist spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who has made his mark as one of the top bowlers in the world.

Hasaranga is also a useful batsman with a high score of 74 with two fifties.

Namibia Team News

Namibia, Sri Lanka’s first rivals since competing in the 2003 edition, are returning to the World Cup stage. Captain Gerhard Erasmus was only seven years old when Namibia last played in the World Cup, going without a win in six matches.

The team has done well recently and is expected to put up a good fight. He achieved ODI status after appointing former Leicestershire coach Pierre de Bruyne and bringing in former South Africa international Albie Morkel as his assistant.

The same year they achieved ODI status, Namibians also qualified for the T20 World Cup qualifiers. Namibia also won against Bermuda, Kenya and Singapore, winning a do-or-die match against the much-loved Scottish outfit.

Captain Erasmus went ahead with the bat and scored three half-centuries. All-rounder JJ Smit scored 190 runs at a strike rate of 168, with dependable Craig Williams and Stephen Byrd providing valuable runs at the top.

With the ball, left-arm pacers Smit and Jan Frylink did well with the new ball, while Bernard Scholtz’s finger-spin suffocated the opposing players in the middle overs, much to the detriment of their goal-handed action. All bowled and lbw out.

The inclusion of former South African international player David Wiese has strengthened the team. With Vice joining the squad, Smit can move up the batting order well. Given his ability to swing the new ball or push it away from right-handed players, he is likely to play a big role in his bowling side as well.
