Till Sunday night, over 530 people fell ill after allegedly drinking contaminated water in a dozen villages and the number rose further on Monday.

Banah, Jandgi Gujran, Jandali Rajputan, Paniyala, Pathiyalu, Niyati, Rangas Chowki Har, Thane and Shankar were among the most affected villages.

Rangas Panchayat chief Rajeev Kumar had said on Sunday that at least two to three people in every household have fallen ill after consuming contaminated water provided by the Jal Shakti Department.

It is believed that the high concentration of bacteria in the water causes the disease, he said, and attributed this to the contamination of the pit from which the water is supplied.

Villagers said that water was supplied from an under-construction tank without filters. The report of the water sample is still awaited.

Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, who is also the MLA from Naudan, has directed the district administration and the health department to take proper care of the patients and ensure that there is no shortage of medicines and other items.
