“In late 2014, I found myself with a persistent back issue that was not subsiding. Every morning, I had to do a routine for 45 minutes to loosen up my back, but at any time of the day The stiffness could return.

“Then Basu sir and I had a conversation about lifting weights and getting all the explosive power in my body,” Kohli wrote.

Shankar, who worked with the national team from 2015-2019, is seen as the man responsible for Kohli’s transformation and the fitness of the Indian team.

“At first I was not sure (about lifting), but the only thing Basu sir asked from me was ‘faith’. I had full faith in his knowledge and experience.

“I remember in our series against Sri Lanka in 2015, I started learning lifting from Basu sir, understood the dynamics and study behind the practice and realized that I was working towards doing something amazing.

“The results were excellent, and it changed my perception of S&C and the importance of knowing what you’re headed in.”

Kohli, who himself launched the book on social media last week, heaped praise on Shankar, who is currently with RCB.

“Basu sir is the best S&C coach I have worked with, and his ability to make you feel comfortable with his template is absolutely amazing. I’ve never worked with someone who knew how to transform my body and performance according to my needs, and not through a set template that was common to everyone.

“I really believe through this book, one can dive into the details and knowledge that can definitely change your perception of what training means, the way you work and how you work. How do you feel about the body, after reducing the program to a T, as Basu sir likes to say,” Kohli said.
