Loofahs are a common sight in many bathrooms and it is widely believed that the loofah helps in achieving better cleansing of the body as it exfoliates the skin. But few people know that loofahs can also be a breeding ground for many bacterial and fungal organisms that can have harmful effects on your body and even lead to infections.

Thus, to use the loofah effectively, you need to take the time to clean it before you clean it. People usually leave wet loofahs hanging in the bathroom for hours, where bacteria and fungi thrive in the moist and warm environment.

The loofah should be sun-dried after bathing and consider placing it in lukewarm water for a few minutes before rubbing it on your skin. This way it will create more foam and also because a dry loofah becomes rough and can leave rashes on your body.

Like a toothbrush, it is advised to swap out an old loofah for a new one every three to four weeks to get rid of all the buildup that has accumulated in it, especially when you use it daily. It is also better to avoid using a loofah right after shaving a particular area as there is a high chance that you may end up with a rash that can even turn into a painful blister.

There are different types of loofahs available in the market with plastic ones being the most common but plastic can be extra harsh on your skin so one can go for other natural alternatives like sea sponges. Natural sponges contain no dyes or chemicals and some even contain bacteria-killing enzymes that make them completely safe for use. The loofah helps in better blood circulation when used gently on the body with ample amount of shower gel or soap and also removes excess dead skin.
