A fire broke out in a laboratory of the Jawaharlal Nehru University on Tuesday morning, but no casualty was reported, an official said.

The incident took place in a laboratory of the School of Physical Sciences and was the result of a short circuit, the official said.

A senior police officer said, “No one has been hurt.”

The JNU Students’ Union has written a letter to Vice-Chancellor Santashree D Pandit expressing concern over the ‘shortcomings’ in the security department and the ‘negligence’ of the administration in saving the lives of students.

It claimed that there was no smoke alarm or fire extinguisher inside the laboratories.

“On seeing the fire, a student immediately informed a security guard. But the guard was unable to help him as he knew nothing about fire safety. “The only thing he could do was, as the fire intensified, so he called the fire brigade,” JNUSU said in a statement.

“The students are not given any proper training on fire safety. The students do not even know how to operate the fire extinguisher. Proper ventilation is not available in science schools and no emergency exits have been made,” it claimed.
