Earthquake in Gujarat: 4.2 Magnitude Tremors Jolt Kutch; No Casualty Reported

AhmedabadAn earthquake of magnitude 4.2 hit Gujarat’s Kutch district on Monday morning, the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) said. The district administration said that there was no report of loss of life or property. The Gandhinagar-based ISR said in an update on its website that the quake, with its epicenter 11 km north-northeast of Dudhai village in the district, was recorded at 6.38 am.

The ISR said that earlier an earthquake of magnitude 3.2 had occurred at 5.18 am with its epicenter 23 km east-southeast of Khavda village in the district. Kutch, which is about 400 km from Ahmedabad, is located in a very high-risk seismic zone and experiences low-intensity earthquakes regularly.

The district, located in the Saurashtra region, was hit by a devastating earthquake in January 2001 that killed 13,800 people and injured another 1.67 lakh. The earthquake caused severe damage to properties in various towns and villages of the district.
