Congress and BJP leaders indulged in a Twitter spar on Saturday, amid attempts by the ruling BJP to rename Karnataka’s infamous Indira Canteen after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah asked the BJP government not to indulge in “petty politics” over the same issue.
BJP general secretary CT Ravi took to Twitter to ask state chief minister Basavaraj Bommai to rename Indira Canteen- a flagship program launched by the previous Congress-led government to provide food to economically backward people.
“Request Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to rename Indira Canteens across Karnataka as ‘Annapoorneshwari Canteen’ at the earliest. See no reason why Kannadigas should be reminded of the dark days of Emergency while having food,” tweeted Ravi.

Responding to the suggestion, former CM Siddaramaiah said, “It has been a tradition to name roads and government buildings after national leaders,” whether the @BJP4India government will rename the stadium which was named after @narendramodi. Is? Flyover after Deendayal Upadhyay and City Bus Corporation after Vajpayee? Will BJP change his name?”
He explained why the initiative was named after the former PM, “Mrs Indira Gandhi initiated reforms to end poverty and implemented the Land Reforms Act. The canteen was named after him to honor him for his contribution. What’s wrong with remembering his contribution?” He tweeted.

He also questioned the current government’s move to rename the Khel Ratna award and remove the reference to Rajiv Gandhi. During this. Congress’ Dinesh Gundu Rao said other party members also slammed BJP’s Ravi, “It is not Indira Canteen, but your bad mindset which needs to be changed.”
“Like a messenger of hate, CT Ravi has pressurized the CM to change the name of Indira Canteen. If the hunger of the poor is quenched only by changing the name, then I have no objection. The BJP government has stopped the grant of Indira Canteen. What needs to be changed is the bad mindset of CT Ravi and not the name of Indira Canteen,” said Rao.
