Deoghar airport gets approval for commercial flight operations, to be inaugurated soon

The newly constructed Deoghar airport is likely to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 12, officials said. He said the airport is ready for commissioning as two flight tests have been successful. When commissioned, it will be the second airport of international standards in Jharkhand after Birsa Munda International Airport in Ranchi and will provide air connectivity to Jharkhand, North West Bengal and South-East Bihar.

On June 29, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) granted an airport license to Jharkhand’s Deoghar airport, allowing it to handle narrow-bodied aircraft such as the A321 and B737. “Newly constructed Deoghar airport in Jharkhand received an airport license from DGCA today,” the Airports Authority of India (AAI) wrote on Twitter.

“The license has been upgraded from 3C to 4C, allowing commercial operation of up to Airbus 321, Boeing 737 type and equivalent aircraft. A 3C license allows an airport to handle only regional aircraft such as the ATR-72. This will also facilitate easy contact for the pilgrims coming to Baidyanath Dham.

Deoghar airport will be the second airport in the state after Ranchi. Spread over a sprawling area of 650 acres, the design of the terminal building is inspired by the structure of the Baba Baidyanath Temple. Tribal art, handicrafts and paintings of local tourist spots are on display in the terminal building.

To protect the environment, the airport has installed solar power and water harvesting systems. With its strategic location, the airport will provide air connectivity to the people of Dumka, Gonda, Banka and the neighboring state of Bihar.

With the construction of the new airport at Deoghar, regional connectivity is set to get a major boost. It will boost tourism and open up new business opportunities in tribal dominated area.
