Congress leaders met Uddhav Thackeray; ‘No discussion yet on continuation of MVA’

Maharashtra Congress leaders on Thursday met Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray at his suburban Bandra residence Matoshree, a day after he resigned as chief minister. Congress leader Nitin Raut said it was a courtesy call as he had worked with Thackeray as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition government for the last two and a half years.

Asked whether the Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP alliance would continue with the MVA, he said it was yet to be discussed. He said that Congress will work as an opposition party. State Congress chief Nana Patole said the party would fight the upcoming local body elections on its own, while the decision to continue the alliance for the assembly and Lok Sabha elections would be taken by the party leadership. Patole said that the three parties will come together to raise issues related to the common people.

Besides Raut and Patole, Congress leaders Prithviraj Chavan, Balasaheb Thorat, Amit Deshmukh, Sunil Kedar and Yashomati Thakur met Thackeray. “We assured Thackeray that Congress is with him and we will fight the new government on political and legal fronts as it is coming to power through corrupt means,” Chavan told PTI. Chavan said the Shiv Sena chief told him that he would not give up.

Sources said that Thackeray’s sons Aditya, Sachin Ahir, Vinayak Raut, Bhaskar Jadhav, Diwakar Raote and Subhash Desai were present from the Shiv Sena side. Thackeray resigned as chief minister on Wednesday after the Supreme Court cleared a floor test following a revolt by Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and most of the Shiv Sena MLAs.
