Now, Cyber Crime Division Delhi Police has intervened to show how Google play Store search results can help scammers to commit KYC frauds across India. In a tweet, DCP Cybercrime showed that KYC discovery Google Play store shows TeamViewer Instant Support as the first result. This is the same app that is being used to carry out KYC fraud in India.
“Dear Google India, Online fraud in the name of KYC verification is rampant. Fraudsters use remote access apps to steal card details, netbanking details and OTPs. Search using the keyword ‘KYC’ on Google Play Store Team Viewer shows Quick Support as the first option. Such tips and hints from Play Store help fraudsters to trick gullible users. This could be one of the reasons why people are being motivated to install such apps in the name of KYC updation. Please resolve this issue in public interest,” DCP Cyber Crime tweeted from its official Twitter handle and also attached a video showcasing the issue.

As far as the scam is concerned, mobile users are threatened to submit documents for eKYC verification by calling a certain number within 24 hours of receipt of the KYC message to avoid discontinuation of services.
A fraudster claiming to be from the customer care team calls or sends an SMS regarding incomplete KYC form. He requests the customer to install a Quick Help app from the Google Play store to help him. Since no such app exists, when the user tries to install it, he is redirected to the Teamviewer Quick Support app. Teamviewer Quick Support App allows fraudsters to take over the device and the accounts associated with the device remotely. After that whatever the user sees on his mobile screen is also visible to the fraudster who then secretly takes a screenshot of the online banking password.
Keeping in mind the rampant misuse of TeamViewer app, developers have recently added face and fingerprint lock for smartphones to prevent unauthorized access. While Teamviewer is a well-known platform for IT professionals, it is considered as one of the most dangerous apps in India.
